ABSTRACT

Literary sources often favor love (and consequently sex) as a theme, and medieval literature is no exception. The sources are very rich, but in their richness there is ambiguity. I had a difficult time choosing among those works that are “courtly” and those that are “sexual,” since, particularly in literature, there are no sharp lines of distinction. For example, The Lais of Marie de France (item 141) are mostly courtly tales, but they do include some references to castration and homosexuality, so I have included them here.
