ABSTRACT

The corporate governance (CG) framework provides the principles for promoting the accountability and stewardship of companies’ actions to their shareholders and other stakeholders for the attainment of economic and social goals. The introduction of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) framework by Bursa Malaysia in 2006 and CSR national awards (such as CSR Malaysia Award) acknowledge the role of companies’ CSR activities as an agent of change in the socio-economic transformation in Malaysia. The CSR activities by companies aspire to go beyond financial performance to promote sustainable economies by addressing socio-economic issues, such as the inequality in wealth, education, and employment in the society. This chapter aims to provide an analysis of the role of companies’ CSR activities in supporting the socio-economic transformation in Malaysia.
