ABSTRACT

Since 15th century, the application of protective fabric as main material for the body armor used silk fabric. The increase in the demand for the advanced fibers for the protective body armor has been directly influenced by the modern armor designs, which in their turn, accomplished the increase of the bullet Muzzle energy. This chapter acquaints the reader with the analyses of the different types of the textile fibers and their physical, mechanical, chemical, thermal, tribological properties that define the armor performance and comfort. Also, it permits to determine the cost coupled with body armor protective capabilities and the risk rating. That will assist a designer to designate armor performance depending on the threat intensity and the implication of the harm on the wearer.
