ABSTRACT

This chapter counters traditional medical and psychological responses to problematic alcohol and other drug-use experiences. It frames a sociological response through lenses of loss, resilience and well-being. In doing so, it explores three key considerations. Firstly, individuals, cultures, families and societies display survival and thriving responses to large volumes of consumption and are often the resource that ensures that not all use ends up in the most negative of outcomes. In this context, it then explores the role of collective and peer activity as processes of community resilience which are critical in supporting individuals to achieve positive lifestyle goals. Finally, it explores how adopting strength-based practices are well suited to enhancing individual and community well-being. The overriding message is that collective and societal positioning enables and supports people to make positive lifestyle changes.
