ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 examines the use of citation in qualitative inquiry. After identifying nine general principles and noting the traditional ways for referencing others, the chapter offers some alternative writing strategies for working with the words of others. In general, it argues that when citing others, authors should be respectful. Instead of using quotes to develop an argument, creative researchers might use citation to engage in dialogue. This way of thinking about another’s words puts into play a conversational opening, a communicative act not designed to make a case, but to consider what others say with respect, with intellectual and imaginative curiosity, with emotional and somatic sensitivity, and with creativity. In short, the strategies named invite readers to be good conversational partners. The chapter concludes with an array of writing prompts designed to open possibilities for respectfully using the words of others.
