ABSTRACT

Several days before we reached Urga we had already heard that Bogdo Kure (God’s Cloister) had changed its official name to Ulan Bator Khoto (Stronghold of the Red Power), and this gave us a hint in what direction the political wind had been blowing. When, late one afternoon, we rode through the winding streets of the strange city and its open places crowded with riders, we met, moreover, fewer lamas and more Mongolian soldiers in Soviet uniform than on our earlier visits. We put up at Larson’s house where we were made welcome by his English manager, Mr. Attree.
