ABSTRACT

On the third day there was great excitement among the Soyotes. A couple of hunters had come in from the east with ill news for the smallest and poorest tent in the camp. We accompanied our host thither and, pressing through the assembled multitude gesticulating around the tent, saw a distressing sight which aroused our sympathy. On a cowhide by the burnt-out fire sat a sweet young Soyote girl, dissolved in tears. She was inconsolable and did not reply to our questions. We returned to the people to hear what tragic tidings the two hunters had carried to the tent.
