ABSTRACT
We were now out upon the real steppes which undulated endlessly around us as far as the eye could reach, right up to the horizon trembling in the heat. We were outside the cultivated and settled territory, but sought in vain for Mongol tents and the herds of horses and cattle which here should have had the best chance of subsistence.
