ABSTRACT
This essay asks what we joke about when we joke about adaptation the practice of turning novels into films, in the most repeated ratio. Jokes about adaptation drawn from television and the Internet tell us much about the perception of adaptations in popular culture. They also suggest that the practice of adaptation hews closely to the practice of joking itself, raising the related question of how comedy studies could expand the field of adaptation studies (and vice versa).
