ABSTRACT
Two kinds of beauty are recognized in Chinese arts history, namely, the beauty of nature and the beauty of carving. The beauty of Shoushan stone carving art is the natural blending and perfect unity of these two kinds of aesthetic feelings. The beauty of superficial carved Field-yellow stone as mentioned by the author is representative of reaching the proverbial realm—“the extreme of splendor relies on plainness.”
