ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 analyzes the continued evolution of the Ben-Yehuda family’s daily popular newspaper, now renamed Ha-Or, in 1910–1914. The editors continued to use mass-journalism strategies but found their newspaper increasingly beleaguered due to growing competition in the public sphere. Pursuant to the media revolution, rival popular newspapers that imitated Ben-Avi’s editorial style sprouted in Jerusalem. The most prominent of them was Ha-Herut, which gradually became a serious contender for Ha-Or’s hegemony, ultimately surmounting its rival by initiating its own media events, such as that associated with Yosef Haim Brenner.
