ABSTRACT

When Gaucelm Faidit had given up addressing his songs to Lady Maria de Ventadorn through the wiles of Lady Audiart de Malamort, as you have heard, he remained for a long time saddened and suffering over the great trickery that he had been subjected to. But Lady Marguarita d’Albusso, the wife of Sir Rainaut, the viscount of Aubusson, brought back his joy in singing, for she said so many pleasing things to him and gave him so many loving glances that he fell in love with her and begged her for her love. And she, since he placed her in such a noble position and sang about her, received his prayers and gave them heed and promised him to give him pleasure in the rights of love. 1 Sir Gaucelm Faidit’s entreaties went on for a long time, as did the love that he had for Lady Marguarita d’Albusso. He praised her greatly and begged her in word and deed and she, while recognizing that he and his praise of her were the reason for her being happy, had no love for him and never gave him pleasure in the rights of love. But one time, when he was leaving her, he kissed her on the neck and she allowed this, lovingly, and on that pleasure he lived for a long time in great happiness.
