ABSTRACT

There was a long period during which Gaucelm Faidit turned his attentions to Lady Jordana d’Ebreu, a city which is located at the entry into Lombardia, just at the limit of Provence. She was a very beautiful lady: noble, attractive, learned and courtly. He composed his songs about her, honored and served her so much and begged her for her attentions so much that she fell in love with him and made of Gaucelm Faidit her knight and her lover. In his songs, they called each other “Good-Hope,” as he says in one song that he composed about her, and which begins like this: It greatly irritates me….. ………. And everything that exists is seeking its joy, And my fine heart breaks and grows bitter Because I am not there where I have my Good-Hope And without her I can feel no joy. (167,40) 1
