I have told you who Sir Guilem de Saint Leidier was and where he came from, who his lady was and how Sir Ugo Manescalc was his, and how all three called each other “Bertran” : Sir Guilem, the marquise, and Sir Uc. 1 Sir Guilem had loved and honored the marquise for a long time. Their love had endured and they had always carried on the affair very graciously, without blame or madness, because they kept secret what should be kept secret and in confidence. Everyone was happy about their love on account of the many gracious deeds that were done and words spoken in the name of their love.
