ABSTRACT

Dalfi d’Alvergne was the lover of a lady from his castle whose name was Maurina. One day she asked the governor of Dalfi’s estate for some lard and eggs to fry and he sent her one-half a bacon. The Bishop learned of this and composed this stanza in which he blamed the governor for not having given her the whole bacon, and Dalfi for having made him give her only one-half: For Christ’s sake, if the servant were mine I’d give him a knife to the heart For he gave only a part of the bacon To her who asked him for it so graciously. He knew just what Dalfi wanted 5 For had he put any more or less in that package He would have given him three (blows) to the cheek. But I can truly say That Maurina had little lard in which to fry the eggs.
