ABSTRACT

Peire Pelisier was from Martel, from one of the Viscount of Torrena’s towns. He was an esteemed bourgeois, noble, generous and courtly. Through his courage and intelligence his reputation grew so greatly that the viscount made him the governor of all his lands. Dalfi d’Alvergne was at that time the lover of Lady Comtor, the daughter of the viscount, a woman with a great reputation for beauty and nobility. Peire Pelisier served him every time that he came to him, giving him anything he desired and lending him his money. However, when Peire Pelisier wanted to recover his money, Dalfi did not want to pay him, refused to give him recompense for the services he had performed and stopped seeing the lady; he no longer went to the land where she lived and sent her no messages or letters. This is why Peire Pelisier composed this stanza: I ask the Dalfi to stay in his home, To eat his full, and be careful not to grow thin For no one knows any worse way to avoid his friend When he has taken from him his capital and his interest. The messages and correspondence have stopped 5 And I have not seen a card or letter for a long time. No man is worse at accomplishing what he says; But he is young and will mend his ways.
