ABSTRACT

To illustrate the dangers of grandiosity, this chapters presents examples from the life of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur sailor who convinced himself (and those around him) that he could participate in a solo sailing race across the globe. Crowhurst was a Puer type who suddenly acted out his fantasies, to his demise. The mythological story of Odysseus and Carl Jung's pursuits are presented as examples of the search for knowledge. Grandiosity being associated often, but not only, with the pursuit of money and wealth, the chapter ends with more recent examples of disastrous financial endeavors, including our everyday financial decisions.
