ABSTRACT

The case for the restoration of agriculture to its rightful place in our national life is, when stated as a national problem, so overwhelming in both principle and detail that independent thinkers who consider this problem on its merits cannot imagine why agriculture was ever allowed to decay and why its restoration is opposed. In the years 1941 and 1942 an attempt seemed to be being made to create some sort of coalition against large-scale restoration of agriculture, between the financiers supported by leaders of the export trade, the economists, and a few leaders of agricultural thought. In the mind of a large section of the public, opposition is made convincing by the phrase: “Your food will cost you more” if it is produced at home. It is then worthwhile to make a few comments on this slogan, which has controlled the situation in the past and may do so in the future.
