ABSTRACT

There are several factors that cause loss of plant nutrient (macro and micro) from soil surface horizon. Plant nutrients from the soil are usually lost in different ways, among them big amounts are removed from the soil due to the harvest of crops, and weeds also remove a considerable quantity of plant nutrients from the soil. Leaching and erosion are also among the important causes that lead to the removal of nutrients from the soil. In the current global atmospheric condition, environmental pollution is increasing by agricultural chemicals, industrial wastes, and construction wastes etc. that results in the deterioration of the soil health. So, in order to cope up 412with the current emerging problem, it is important to exploit the microbial metabolic potential in the construction of several genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs). This chapter deals with the various examples for the designing of safer GEMs for environmental release with specific emphasis on the use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria production, biological control of plant diseases, and biodegradation for agricultural production enhancement.
