ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses some of the many challenges facing professionals in post-compulsory education nowadays. It considers applying for recognition of higher education professionals' teaching, for example professional accreditation, or National Teaching Fellowship. The chapter looks at some of the challenges arising from the ‘disintermediation’ of the lecturer in the competitive and global contexts facing higher education in our age where so much is online. Plagiarism has become one of the most significant and disturbing problems which coursework assessors find themselves facing. The chapter argues that neither traditional ‘knowledge delivery’ models of teaching, nor a purely ‘student-centred’ approach, adequately addresses the challenges of student diversity. Most universities seek to recruit both staff and students from around the globe, but all too often cultural differences are seen as problematical rather than an enrichment of the learning environment.
