ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of ‘boundary’ and addresses the many forms in which it presents itself. In particular, attention is drawn to dualities such as personal/professional and boundary crossings/violations.

The chapter leans heavily on the work of Dr Glen Gabbard and his associates and Dr S.H. Foulkes and his associates and, in this way, illustrates the foreground dynamics of various uses and misuses set against a group analytic framework. Within this, some attention is given to the impact all this has on the group analyst and how s/he thinks about the emerging situation and what interventions, if any, to make.

All of this is illustrated by extensive use of case vignettes primarily in mental health settings.
