ABSTRACT

Notwithstanding the breadth and depth of subjects addressed by the contributors, as stated in the introduction, Black USA and Spain is not a comprehensive or definitive exploration of the memories that Spaniards and African Americans shared. This chapter focuses on performers such as Josephine Baker in the context of the Jazz Age, it has not explored the presence of this genre or other African American artists active in Spain’s musical scene beyond the 1930s. Black Lives Matter events were held in Madrid in 2014 after the death of African American Eric Garner at the hands of the police. Footage of these events provides evidence that they became an occasion to protest US police brutality and impunity, but also an opportunity to denounce the discrimination facing blacks in Spain and, as a consequence, to build Pan-African alliances.
