ABSTRACT

This chapter examines different views about US–Iran relations while explaining how to conquer the fear of confrontation between the two countries. After providing a historical context within which the two countries have interacted, we turn to the evolution of US–Iran relations in the aftermath of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Our central argument is that from a strategic standpoint, the United States and Iran still have several mutual goals that can be achieved, not the least of which is maintaining stability in the region in the face of the terrorist threat (such as ISIS) as well as containing or even defeating the Islamic extremists in the region.
