ABSTRACT

The Zhenzheng lun consists of three juan. Juan 1 comprises DS 1-7. Juan 2 comprises DS 8-20. Juan 3 comprises DS 21-30. As the replies by the Xiansheng are frequently very complex, I have – wherever necessary to avoid confusion –divided them into paragraphs to make clear where one argument ends and a new one begins. Where replies of the Xiansheng are divided, I have numbered the paragraphs as [Part 1], [Part 2] and so forth. The most complex reply given by the Xiansheng is the one in DS 28. Here the situation is again different. In his statement in DS 28, the Gongzi suggests that Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism could be more or less the same. The Xiansheng’s reply opens with an introduction which is followed by an explanation why Confucianism is different from Buddhism and an explanation why Daoism is different from Buddhism. Here both of these explanations, due to their length, also needed to be subdivided into paragraphs. Even though the Gongzi’s statements are usually presented without subdivision, a subdivision seemed helpful in the Gongzi’s statement in DS 28.
