ABSTRACT

In general, safety is one of the fundamental needs for human beings. In his ‘hierarchy of human needs’, Maslow describes that security needs are most important after the physiological needs such as water, food, and housing. Safety needs are about finding safe circumstances and stability, but also about job security and protection from fear and anxiety. Since World War II, the micro level security situation in European countries has generally deteriorated. Crime rates in the cities involved in the research have been increasing over the past decades. Each city in the network has its own specific complexity of crime problems, but some generalizations can be made. The three British cities - Birmingham, Leeds, and Glasgow - for example, face problems related to the night-time economy. One of these problems is binge drinking, which is the habit of drinking as much alcohol as possible in a short period of time.
