ABSTRACT

Rotterdam is under the spell of safety. To enhance the feeling of safety and security in the city seems to be the main concern of every policy effort. Rotterdam is going all out to chart the security risks, and to design and carry out plans to reduce them. As far as security is concerned, Rottwrdam even seems to have become exemplary for other European cities. Rotterdam is located in the Rhine Delta, on Europe’s busiest river and in open connection with the world’s busiest sea. The Rotterdam region counts nearly 1.2 million inhabitants and is situated less than 30 km from the regions of The Hague, Delft/Westland and the ‘Drechf’ cities. As well as being one of the world’s largest seaports, Rotterdam has a small regional airport and is a prominent transport and distribution hub for rail, road and water traffic. Rotterdam Central Station will be connected to the high-speed rail link Amsterdam-Schiphol-Brussels-Paris/London in 2007.
