ABSTRACT

The Hague is situated in the western part of The Netherlands along the coast. Its wider region, Haaglanden, has about 963,000 inhabitants and consists of Delft, Westland, Rijswijk, Wassenaar and some other municipalities. The region of Haaglanden is located next to Rotterdam. Together with Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, The Hague belongs to the Randstad conurbation. In The Netherlands foreign people are defined as ‘all people of whom the parents is bom in a foreign country’. This is in contradiction to most other European countries, where foreign people are defined as ‘people who are bom in a foreign country’. The percentage of inhabitants with a non-Dutch background in the Laak district is rather high compare to the city of The Hagu. Historically, The Hague is the centre of politics and administration in The Netherlands. Every two years the city of The Hague monitors the perception of its inhabitants on all aspects of the living environment.
