ABSTRACT

Attempting a definition of the fictional character concept, the first chapter introduces notions of personality, personhood and identity in order to lay the foundation upon which the ‘Character Schema’ can be built.

Exploring the uniqueness of character through cultural prisms, and examining the validity of viewing the fictional character a psychological construct, this chapter also investigates those parameters that, much like in the person schema, can be considered to constitute the fictional identity: a proper name; a physical embodiment; a past identity; the surrounding textual society and environment; and the inner self.
