ABSTRACT

This final chapter will first summarize the main ideas of the book – how the barriers towards sustainability can be addressed and what role the sustainable action principles play. This might also serve as a quick first overview for readers to get the main idea of the book in a nutshell. The second section will return to the question posed in the Chapter 1, whether sustainability is to be considered a utopian ideal. This will be corroborated and three challenges to the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals will be discussed before a new concept for the utopian vision of sustainability is suggested. To improve conceptual clarity and allow the utopian vision of sustainability, i.e. the ultimate goal of humankind, to be distinguished from the concrete means to reach it (sustainable actions and measures), a new term for the former will be proposed: the ultimate vision of sustainability is, as will be suggested, the future of terra and humanity – “Futeranity”. A brief outlook will conclude the book.
