ABSTRACT

Sustainability challenges are global in nature, but so far no effective governance system for global issues has been established. There are several different reasons for this: Existing structures and institutions are not accepted by all nations, they reflect the outdated post-war power structures, they are not sufficiently executed, or they lack ambition. International contracts and treaties are being terminated. The existing functioning global institutions are constantly running on short budgets, their internal structures are often nepotistic and not democratic. Their rule sets are not aligned with each other (e.g. WTO vs. UN), updates which would reflect more current issues are difficult to agree on (Doha), they often do not operate effectively, they lack executive power, they do not cover all relevant issues, or they are not accepted by the dominant players.
