ABSTRACT

Plays are about events happening between people and as such are grounded in the reality of the characters who are participating in those special events. For an hour or two during a play, an intimate relationship is established between the audience and the characters on stage. Therefore, a dramatic writer must know his or her characters in the most intimate of ways. Character is action. It will always be the character speaking, then, and not the author. When the playwrights are certain they know their characters completely and passionately, that they have come to love, respect, and understand them, then the playwrights are ready to begin writing. Characters in a drama should be in opposition to the situation. It is the work of the playwright to create a character of unequivocal interest and uniqueness, to create that character with affection, and to know how and why that character will act in any given circumstance.
