ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the historical development of sport policy in Taiwan and the related issue of how sport is structured and managed. Throughout the chapter, the descriptions of political context and sport administrative structure reforms are used to highlight and illustrate significant developments in the sport policy domain. Since the Republic of China’s government retreated to Taiwan in 1949, government involvement in sport has developed through four distinct periods: the Council of Physical Education of the Ministry of Education (1949–1972), the Department of Physical Education of the Ministry of Education (1973–1997), the Sports Affairs Council of the Executive Yuan and the Department of Physical Education of the Ministry of Education (1997–2012) and the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education (2013 to the present).
