ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Indonesia’s sport development policy in the context of the country’s leadership since independence in 1945. The country’s leadership is divided into three eras: first, President Soekarno, also known as Bung Karno, in the Old Order era (1945–1967); second, President Soeharto, also known as Pak Harto, in the New Order era (1967–1998); and third, the Reform era (1998 – present), which has been led by five presidents. Sport development policies in Indonesia are discussed in a concentrated fashion that focuses on the practice and development of sport policies in the Old Order and New Order eras. Development policy for sport in the Old Order era was focused on international political diplomacy and positioning the country in the international order. In the New Order era, a vision for the development of Indonesian society through sport for all was captured in the motto of socialising sport and cultivating the community, and this vision was combined with participating in regional and international multi-sport events.
