ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a background on disability in Malaysia and highlights the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008. The right to access and participate in sport is recognised in this Act, as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Disability sport in Malaysia is supported by both government and non-governmental organisations. Positive trends in terms of government support, media coverage and public perception can be seen, especially after Malaysia’s performance at the 2016 Paralympic Games. This increased interest in disability sport could serve as an impetus to champion the rights of persons with disabilities. Opportunities to raise awareness about disability and contribute to equality are discussed, together with existing challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
