ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the story of a rising star of India. Straddling the narrow beam between artistic flair and athletic adroitness is India’s very own gymnast extraordinaire, Dipa Karmakar. Rising from humble beginnings, Dipa’s story is one of unwavering dedication and prodigious talent. She decisively overcame every obstacle thrown at her and shattered glass ceilings while setting the standard for Indian women athletes. In the process, she broke open a country-wide interest in artistic gymnastics that has grown ever since. Her story unveils the growing potential of young Indian sporting brilliance and the extent to which it can grow when it is cherished and celebrated.
