ABSTRACT

The genus Brachystelma belongs to the tribe Ceropegieae of the subfamily Asclepiodoideae of the family Apocynaceae. To date, 32 species have been reported from India, the majority from Peninsular India; 31 of them are endemic and 30 (about 94%) had no recollections after the types. In this chapter, these 32 species have been systematically enumerated. The enumeration of species includes key to species, complete citation according to ICN, type specimen, etymology, basionym if any, and synonyms to connect to flora of British India and other regional floras. It is followed by detailed description, distribution in the state, flowering and fruiting period, vernacular names, specimens examined, India and World distribution, and IUCN category. The chapter is profusely illustrated with line drawings, color photographs, and distribution maps in India.
