ABSTRACT

The genus Brachystelma R.Br. has represented more than 120 species distributed from sub-Saharan Africa, India to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia (Meve and Liede, 2001; Meve, 2002). Jagtap and Singh (1999) recorded 14 species of Brachystelma in India and reported that most of them are endemic. In recent years, many new species have been described especially from southern India and the number of Indian Brachystelma extends up to 33 species (Prasad and Rao, 2013; Rasingam et al., 2013; Kambale et al., 2014; Britto and Bruyns, 2016; Prasad and Prasanna 2016; Prasad et al., 2016, 2017). Brachystelma species usually have swollen fleshy tubers, erect or twining weak stems, and well-developed leaves. The corolla is broadly campanulate, and corolla lobes attenuate to fused tips and form a cage-like structure.
