ABSTRACT

The greatest period of Vandal rule in Africa occurred just before 476, for Gaiseric, the conqueror of the north African provinces, died in the year following. The Roman diocese of Africa included the coastal strip south of the gulf of the Great Syrtes westward nearly to the promontory opposite the modern Gibraltar: the province of Tingitana formed part of the prefecture of the Gauls. The Vandals were good horsemen, who had once been associated with the nomadic Huns: but the plunder of the ships and the sea ports turned their mind to sea piracy. The Vandals from 439 settled down to rule the province from Carthage; their status was recognized by the western emperor in a treaty of 442. Justinian, believing the Vandals crushed, recalled Belisarius and assigned him a triumph, in which Gelimer walked; he himself assumed the titles of Vandalicus and Africanus.
