ABSTRACT

It is well known that ornamental geophytes exhibit great diversity in their morphology, growth and developmental cycles, and physiological responses to environmental factors (De Hertogh and Le Nard 1993). These diverse ornamental crops represent a signi‹cant segment of the global –ower industry and are primarily utilized for: (1) commercial bulb production; (2) –ower production, including outdoor and forced fresh cut –owers; (3) growing as potted plants; and (4) commercial landscaping and private gardens. Like all other plants, ornamental geophytes signi‹cantly contribute to the concept of “Quality to Life”. They add simple pleasures to everyday living and make people feel better, which is critical when they are under stress or in need of a sign of appreciation.
