ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the techniques that can be used to evaluate options: analogies, metaphors, and similes; synectics; nominal group technique; and Crawford slip technique. Many of the same tools and techniques to identify options are also relevant when evaluating and selecting the best options. If everyone is in a matrix organization, then an option to kill the project may not be as threatening as someone who is hard-lined to the project. The former will have a place to go, either back to the home organization or to another project; the latter will have to seek a new position. If lack of time or cost is frequently an issue, then it might indicate a more salient, deep-rooted problem that, ironically, requires a more thorough analysis to determine the best options to deploy. For each option, provide a brief description and note any issues, risks, or other challenges.
