ABSTRACT

In 2000, Mechanical Engineering readers voted on the top 10 engineering achievements of the twentieth century. Bioengineering was ranked no. 9 (Rastegar, 2000, 75-76) stated:

As bioengineering is an extremely interdisciplinary ‰eld, it is challenging to ‰nd a single de‰nition encompassing its entire scope. The Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE) de‰nes biological engineering as “the interface of biological sciences, engineering sciences, mathematics, and computational sciences. It applies biological systems to enhance the quality and diversity of life.” A biology-based engineering discipline that integrates life sciences with engineering in the advancement and application of fundamental concepts of biological systems from molecular to ecosystem levels, https://www.ibe.org (accessed July 12, 2010).
