ABSTRACT

To the layman, architectural engineering is less clearly de‰ned as a ‰eld than, say, electrical engineering, where the parameters of the profession are more ‰rmly set. Architectural engineering is a highly complex ‰eld involving advanced knowledge of both architecture and engineering. Although licensed as engineers rather than as architects, architectural engineers collaborate with architects, and, therefore, must fully understand design concepts and the architect’s vision. They are responsible for building system integration and for ensuring that the mechanical and electrical systems operate properly. Their understanding of building system integration is what differentiates them from civil engineers-although some architectural engineers do specialize in certain ‰elds, such as structures.
