ABSTRACT

Today, these two measures, although still important in the assessment process, have been joined by increasingly sophisticated measures designed to better pinpoint the site of lesion within the auditory system. Previously, a diagnosis of a “sensorineural” hearing loss indicated that the lesion could be located anywhere within the cochlea (sensory) through the VIIIth cranial nerve (neural). With today’s advanced technology and related diagnostic techniques, audiologists can determine damage at the cellular level within the cochlea per se, separating inner hair cell damage from outer hair cell damage as well as identifying sites of lesion within the peripheral and central auditory nervous system.
