ABSTRACT

A neural prosthesis (NP) is an assistive system that provides/augments a function that was lost/diminished because of the injury or disease of the nervous system (Popović and Sinkjær, 2000; Peckham 2005). External electrical stimulation is the most frequently used instrument within an NP. More precisely, functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivers bursts of pulses (electrical charge). is charge targets neural systems and elicits activity that is followed by muscle contractions leading to a function. FES could be understood as a pacemaker of movement and a bypass of the missing communications between the central and peripheral sensory-motor systems (Popović et al., 2009).
