ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the different capabilities of modern mobile devices and how these can be leveraged to create useful applications. It investigates the possibilities of integrating different kinds of sensors, which will again open newer dimensions for application development. Popular sensor technologies used in touch screens are resistive or capacitive touch sensor. Touch can also be provided on surface parts of a mobile device other than the screen. The touch controller converts the data from the sensor into information that the driver software can understand. A proximity sensor by definition is a sensor that is capable of detecting a nearby object without any physical contact. A temperature sensor, also called as an infrared sensor, consists of a sensor module, an electronic circuitry, and an optomechanical system. Biometric sensors are attached in mobile devices for user identification and authentication. Cameras can take snapshots of bar codes, and these bar codes can be read from the mobile screen using a barcode scanner.
