ABSTRACT

KEY POINTS l Approximately 1% of all pregnancies are complicated by

placental abruption. l Nearly 50% of women with placental abruption have no

identifiable risk factors. Risk factors include abruption in a prior pregnancy, maternal hypertensive disorders, smoking, cocaine, polyhydramnios, multiple gestation, preterm and term premature rupture of membrane, chorioamnionitis, elevated maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MS-AFP), leiomyoma, subchorionic hematoma, vaginal bleeding <20 weeks, previous cesarean delivery, and abdominal trauma. Association with thrombophilias has for the most part not been confirmed by prospective studies.
