ABSTRACT

Of all the books that I have read dealing with digital forensics, coverage of psychology, ethics, and culture seems to be completely overlooked. As I work on the cases, it becomes clear to me that these areas are the central aspects of digital forensic investigations. What I want to cover in this chapter would be not only the psychological aspects of the person(s) being investigated but also the psychological aspects of the investigator. An investigator faces many ethical questions, many of which present themselves later on in the examination. Finally, many cultural issues include fairly basic things such as language and idiomatic expressions, and they also include the understanding of the cultural conceptual framework that encompasses an incident. When I have discussions with the investigators about language and cultural issues, they often dismiss the challenge as something that can be handled with a language translation tool. But to me, this is an oversimplification and complete misunderstanding of a complex situation.
