ABSTRACT
When I signed on, the NBS had been “under a cloud” for four years. The Bureau was set up by Congress in the late 1890s as a laboratory in the service of technology and general scientific research for the standardization of weights and measures. The prototype yard and meter bars were on public view, dis played in a large safe on the first floor of the Administration Building.
