ABSTRACT

A Health Information Exchange or Health Information Organization refers to the “electronic movement of health-related information among organizations utilizing nationally recognized standards and policies”. The national Health information technology agenda is presently focused on two primary areas: to increase the adoption of Electronic Health Records, and to build a framework that facilitates the sharing of these records. An implementation of the National Health Information Network (NHIN) technical specifications that enables secure and interoperable healthcare information exchange is called a NHIN Gateway. Healthcare providers and insurers use complex coding systems to create a standardized system for health insurers to process claims and reimburse healthcare providers for healthcare services. The addition of medical device and wellness data will drive additional insights, as will the ability for others to use the combined data for the purposes of research, both to improve clinical and health economic outcomes.
