ABSTRACT

Healthcare in America is changing with developments in technology and new legislation enacted by the Obama Administration. Organizations such as the Health Information Security and Privacy Collaboration and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) are striving to encourage health information exchange and provide rules, such as transfer of private data. The ONC, or Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, is an organization devoted to guiding the healthcare industry. The Health Care Information and Management Systems Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to imparting global leadership in the use of healthcare technology. Medical identity theft is relevant and significant, especially due to the emerging importance of Health Information Exchange. According to an ONC-sponsored report, two general issues of importance are privacy and security. Three important considerations in understanding this issue are prevention, detection, and remediation.
